Each month the yards in our subdivision are judged and if the resident of the one that is considered to have the best display is in good standing with the Association and agrees to accept the accolade it is designated as the Yard-of-the-Month. A sign is placed in that yard throughout the duration of the month, a photograph and write-up are posted here on this web site and the winners are mentioned in our monthly newsletter.

The Yard-of-the-Month award for January goes to Steve and Helen Barricklow of 22211 Bucktrout.  Steve and Helen have lived in The Settlement since 1988, raising their four children here.  Their favorite thing about the neighborhood is that it is established, contained and beautiful.  They commented that even though their children, like those of many of the original families in the neighborhood, are now grown it is nice to see new families with young children buying homes and also getting to experience the enjoyment of life in The Settlement.  Steve and Helen’s yard is well-manicured with boxwoods, sega palms, and aztec grass as well as a very neat and well maintained area of ground cover.  Thanks to both of you for contributing so much to the beauty of our neighborhood.

March Winner - Kathy and Mike Morrow of 22419 Vobe Court
The Yard-of-the-Month award for March goes to Kathy and Mike Morrow of 22419 Vobe Court.  Kathy and Mike are long-time residents of the Settlement having lived here for 33 years. One of the things they say they really love about where they live is the quietness of the neighborhood. Their yard is based on an angel theme.  They have many angel statues and flowers that have the word angel associated with them. These include angel trumpets and pink angel face plants. To add color there are numerous gazania plants, which bloom almost all year long.  One gazania is 'talent mix' that offers blooms in shades of cream, pink, orange, and yellow over fuzzy gray-green foliage all in one plant.  There are also Easter lilies, pink azaleas, pink hibiscus, variegated ginger, aztec grass and pink roses.  Kathy transplanted some lilies from her mother's yard that were in turn transplanted there from her grandmother’s yard, so every time they bloom she is fondly reminded of both her mother and her grandmother.  One neighborhood walker refers to Kathy and Mike's yard as the "Whispering Angel Garden", rightly named because of the angel theme and the soft tones that can be heard from the wind chimes.  Take a stroll down Vobe Court and enjoy the "Whispering Angel Garden" for yourself.
April Winner - Hank and Sharon Babylon of 22422 S. Rebecca Burwell
The April Yard-of-the-Month award goes to Hank and Sharon Babylon of 22422 S. Rebecca Burwell.  Hank and Sharon have lived in The Settlement for 18 years.  They love the fact that the neighborhood is very quiet.  They also like the fact that the houses are not painted wild annoying colors like the neighborhood in which they previously lived.  Their yard is ablaze with beautiful bright pink azaleas, every inch of which have vibrant blooms.  The trees are neatly lined with cast iron plants.  Mixed in the front beds is an array of bird’s nest ferns, red roses, and yellow lantana.  On one end opposite the azaleas is a stunning bridle wreath spirea with each graceful limb afire with clusters of white flowers.  Their back yard is as stunning as the front with a collection of bird houses that each represent a special place such as a Mexican restaurant, a church, an antique store, etc. and they have many hanging plants all abloom.  Thank you Hank and Sharon for adding such beauty to our neighborhood.

The first thing you notice in their yard is the brilliant green tiffway 419 grass.  It looks like a velvet carpet. There is an array of brilliant color in the front yard and driveway flower beds. They have lantanas, esperanzas, knockout roses, bridal spirea, crepe myrtles and verbena growing at the front walk, with periwinkles sprinkled throughout the beds. The tree in the front yard is a Chinese pistache. Their backyard and patio is just as beautiful, colorful and inviting, as the front.
